West Bengal Panchayat Election: Digvijay Singh said on the ongoing incidents of violence in West Bengal that what is happening in the Panchayat elections in Bengal is scary. Voting declared void (West Bengal Panchayat Election)

Congress leader and former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh's comments come after the State Election Commission on Sunday announced that re-polling will be held on Monday in 696 booths for the Bengal panchayat polls, where polling for rural polls has been declared void. In the violence-hit panchayat polls on Saturday, people voted for 2.06 lakh candidates at 61,636 booths. An official said the SEC held a meeting on Sunday evening in which the order was passed after taking note of reports of vote-tampering and violence affecting polling at several places.

Death toll rises to 38

The ruling Trinamool Congress has blamed the Congress, the BJP and the Left for the violence in several districts of the state. Protests took place in various parts of West Bengal against allegations of irregularities and violence in the panchayat elections. Sporadic violence continued in several parts of north and south Bengal on Sunday, a day after at least 18 people were killed during the three-tier panchayat polls in 20 districts, alleging political parties. The death toll in Saturday's violence rose to 19, taking the death toll to 38.
